LICENSING IN TENERIFE - PRIVATE & COMMERCIAL VESSELS

Private Vessels - British Registered
If your boat is British Registered under SSR (Small Ships Register) or full British Registration, you only need to have the ICC (International Certificate of Competence for Operators of Pleasure Craft).  This can be obtained by passing an ICC Test or requesting it having obtained the relevant RYA Certificate.

Private Vessels - Spanish List 7a
According to the Capitania Maritima, they will continue to allow holders of recognized foreign qualifications to use this for spanish registered vessels as long as Authorization is given.  The ICC will be authorized for up to 3 miles from the coast.
  
Commercial Vessels - Spanish List 6a
To Skipper a Spanish List 6a vessels you must have a Spanish Commercial Licence.  The Spanish Authorities have made it easy for foreigners to comply with this rule by introducing the licence for "Professional Skippers of Pleasure Craft" (Patron Profesional de Embarcaciones Recreo).  This is somewhat similar to the rules in the UK.  In order to obtain this qulaification, the holder must be in possession of a "Capitan de Yate" qualification, undergo the STCW 95 Basic Week and hold a VHF Restricted Operators Certificate or a Spanish VHF SRC Certificate.  The candidate may be asked to sit an examination.

Changes To Spanish List 7a & 6a Navigation Certificate
The Spanish Authorities have made changes to the Navigation Certificates, very much in line with UK and other European Countries.  The new certificates are based on the CE Category of your boat.  So if your have a Category "B" vessel, you could go up to 60 miles from land, depending on the equipment you carry.  The onus for carrying the correct equipment for the distance offshore will be on the Skipper of vessel.
