RYA Day Skipper Combined fast track course

This 9-day fast track course combines both the Day Skipper theory shore-based and Day Skipper practical courses in one go. The course normally starts on a Wednesday, or Friday, at the conclusion of a 5 or 7 day practical course. The fast track Day Skipper runs for the next 9 days and you will be accommodated on board the school yacht during this time.

During the 9 day course you will be taught both the practical and theory elements of Day Skipper. The theory elements in our classroom will be dispersed throughout the course in order that there is immediate application of the theory in realistic passage making situations. The course is a combination of continual assessment and written test papers.

In order to enrol on this course, the Candidate should be at RYA Competent Crew level and although it is not essential that this certificate is held, we recommend that the Competent Crew course is taken beforehand.

Breakfast and lunch and one evening meal are provided during the practical element of the course, no meals are included during theory sessions.

By the end of this course, you should feel confident to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day. Following successful completion of the course syllabus you will receive both the RYA Day Skipper shore-based and practical completion certificates.  You will then be able to apply for your International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) and charter vessels at home and abroad.

The RYA Day Skipper Fast Track Course: is designed to teach students to assume full responsibility for the yacht and its crew.  This is the ideal course for anyone about to buy their own yacht.  Students should ideally have attained Competent Crew level ability or have the necessary experience.

Theory section of the course:  Students are taught the basics of coastal and inshore navigation, pilotage, chart work, position fixing, plotting a course, weather forecasting, an understanding of tides, International Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea (IRPCS). You will also be taught safety procedures such as distress calls via radio, use of flares, safety harnesses, life jackets and life rafts as well as general seamanship, types of sailing yacht and the equipment on board.

In the Practical section of the course: You will skipper the yacht on short passages to the island of Gomera and along the coast of Tenerife. There will be much emphasis on boat handling and navigation.  You will visit different harbours and anchorages to practice pilotage techniques.
You will also complete at least 4 night hours sailing to experience night pilotage and identify navigation lights. The course aims to provide you with the skill and confidence required to undertake a short passage in tidal waters as the skipper and be able to berth the boat safely. 

On successful completion of the Day Skipper Fast Track course, you will receive
the RYA Day Skipper + Day Skipper Theory Certificates.
